The Nationals are $185m right now but that includes Bryce's $21m plus in adjusted salary plus Daniel Murphy's $17m and he's a FA at the end of this year too. They could realistically afford Bryce but they'd be hard pressed to do much else after that I'd imagine. Right now, Harper isn't playing at a $400,000,000 level. Big power but a .227 BA? And they have Victor Robles waiting for a job. Strasburg can opt out after this year. If I'm the Nationals, I'm wishing Bryce well at his new job. The one difference is, Harper is 25 and Pujols was 31 when he walked. Has a single one of those gargantuan long term deals worked out in the team’s favor? Maybe for a year or two, but then you’re stuck with aging injured players like Ryan Howard, Albert Pujols, and Miguel Cabrera. Trout would be the only player I’d give that kind of money too, but like you said, maybe whatever team sign Harper will get some return on investment due to his younger age.
