I don't know about that. Baseball has no cap and has produced the most different champions. One of the keys is depth of quality players. Baseball has a lot of depth in talent or at least parity of talent (by which I mean the gap between run of the mill and elite is less than other sports) whereas there's an enormous gap between an elite NBA player and a run of the mill NBA player. Fewer teams would help. I don't know much about baseball but football (soccer) suffers a lot from disparity of finances between rich & poor clubs (as explained by SDM). In football there is very little sense of loyalty (there are people like Buffon but mostly there is no loyalty) and the reason for that is lack of salary cap and disparity between finances of clubs.
