This is why I stopped buying tickets to MLB and NBA games a few years ago.
I am NOT gonna pay $200 for a decent — not great — seat at Yankee stadium, $30 for parking, $16 for beer, $12 for a hot dog, so some twat can make $250 million for hitting a ball. A guy like Giancarlo Stanton makes around $60,000 per at-bat, FFS.
Going to Yankee stadium is a $300 night, just for me. If you’ve got a family of four and you take your wife and two kids to the game, you’re talking about $500 on the very low end and easily $1,000+ if you get decent seats and you get drinks, hot dogs and cotton candy for the kids, which they will want, of course.
NBA is worse in a lot of ways. A mega scrub like Ryan Anderson, who averaged 9 ppg and 5 boards, makes $20 million a year. JR Smith makes $15m a year to average 8 points, a rebound and an assist.
The “resting” trend makes it even worse. This past year ESPN was running stories on which games “tired teams” could rest their starters in DECEMBER. Now imagine you’re that father of two and you spend $600 to get tickets when Cleveland comes to town, your kids are so excited they’re talking about it for months...and the day before the game you hear Lue is gonna “rest” Lebron for that game. Now you’re spending $600 on tickets and another $200+ on parking, good, drinks and beer, to see Kevin Love, JR Smith and Tristan Thompson. Fuck that..
