If a remake ever gets off the ground, I'd be skeptical.
But not because of the fact that it likely wouldn't surpass the original movie. I don't think that's fair given the '75 movie's place in film history, but it'd have little choice but to follow the book more closely than Spielberg did. In order to better distinguish itself. And apparently from what I heard, the book is surprisingly not that great.
Or ditch the original characters and story beats, which is not inherently terrible but would turn off most people who remember the original movie. Aside from that most likely it'd be terrible to do so.
