Watching many Westerns on the Grit-TV channel since they revised their format in January, 2018, to concentrate on Western films. Also noticing some really goofball cliches in these classic Westerns, such as: 1. Character runs out of water in his canteen, and throws away the canteen in disgust. Hey, maybe there's a watering hole just around the corner? 2. Character runs out of bullets and throws his gun at the other gunfighter, who ducks. Does that make sense to just throw away your gun? Also, a gun is a lousy projectile to aim straight. 3. Character wants a drink of whiskey from a bottle in his pocket, and pulls out the cork with his teeth and spits it far away. So does he have a bunch of new corks sitting in his pocket to use?
4. Gang of dry cowboys come upon watering hole, and the first one there is always so stupid that he greedily takes a drink, then learns that it is poisoned. Dies a horrible death.
Some others you can think of?
On # 4. you mentioned here " poisoned water " which reminded me of an episode of the show - The Rifleman from 1958 to 1963 I don't remember what season or episode it was specifically ( the only episode of this show I actually caught once on MeTV ) . It was a scene when Chuck Conners character was telling his son's character - to NOT drink water out of a certain covered wooden barrel or he would become very ill . So in the next scene it was late at night and what does the kid do but go right for the barrel with the tainted water he was already told not to drink from . Thanks so much towncaller for your subject post .
