Are we operating under the assumption that best picture noms are worth anything anymore? Yes because its still a major achievement to be given a nomination in a premier catergory from 5000+ members of the Academy. The Best Picture winner may not always be correct but almost always the nominations are the best films of that year and Black Panther would stick out like a sore thumb. I agree it's not best picture worthy but neither was Fury Road. That horse has left the barn, the Oscars are going to make 'trendy' picks from time to time in order to appeal to different demographics.
