also no. confidence? yes by all means. arrogance? no. the most successful people i have had the privilege to meet, become friends and/or worked with were some of the most humble people I know. Contrary to popular opinion arrogance is not needed in order to get ahead, get recognized or be successful. i honestly cannot see a situation where arrogance would be justified/needed/correct to apply. I can see people being assertive, standing up for themselves, or openly confident as useful. but arrogant? no. now the only area i would take out of this is COMEDY / when done by professional comedians. some stand up comedians have arrogant on/stage persona and there its fine. but off stage it has to go.It's a very interesting question, and your comment about professional comedians, well, I just love it... So, I would agree with you that when people are ON (and that maybe extends itself a bit to performers in general, e.g., Mick Jagger and Barbra Streisand) So, yes, arrogance can be okay, and even appropriate for the duration of the act, like you said, then it's gotta go. It's okay, but from a distance... And comedy, especially, because most truly effective comedy has some layer of brutality in it. David Niven once said that to be an actor it is essential to be an egomaniac, it cannot work any other way. I love his way of putting that. And what's funny is that David Niven never once came across to me as even a little bit arrogant. Though I do realize that arrogance and egomania are not the same thing.
