Intriguing. I'm guessing the Michael Jackson stuff was just temp music and they weren't actually expecting to be allowed to use it in the final film. That could be true, but at that time you could play anything on a TV show or movie and not have necessarily pay the artist anything. I think it all changed in the 90's, which is why you hear muzzak in a lot of TV shows since the 90's, where as in older ones you hear real songs you actually recognize. My friend pointed out that in Supernatural episodes on Netflix they have replaced a lot of the classic rock songs with other cheaper songs. Same thing happened when Daria hit DVD; all of the licensed music was gone. For the most part, it wasn't too noticeable, but there are a few scenes that feel a bit off without the intended musical cues.
