Summer Olympics. 12hrs a day. Tokyo 2020: 33 sports with 339 events. 206 nations competing, 11,091 athletes. The only way the World Cup could match that is if we consider as FIFA does, that the WC truly commences with qualifying, when nearly every nation is playing & competing leading up. Alas, the Olympic qualifying itself then would supercede that angle too. If that's your criteria (and of course it is a perfectly valid criteria) then you are right. If however you think in terms of impact, then the answer has to be the World Cup. I am sure that the entire country of Senegal stopped to watch their match against Japan today - and it wasn't even a deciding match. Nothing comes close in the Olympics. The Olympics may be bigger in terms of numbers but the World Cup is much more important to more people.
