I think they were searching for a way to phase out the old crew and this might be the way. I mean, it's really a win-win right now. People LOVE Infinity War and that had plenty of death and a downer of an ending. Marvel now knows that the audience won't riot in the streets if a hero dies. They can now kill off the original Avengers (Cap, Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, Widow, Hawkeye, and possibly someone like Nick Fury or War Machine) to make way for the new crowd (Black Panther, Captain Marvel, Spider-Man, Ant-Man, etc). That also makes IW continue to stay relevant and costly to our heroes and the overall story, but also leaves room for more movies, which is of course the main goal. My advice to Marvel: don't chicken out. Don't turn back now. They have the world by the throat and making everything end all fine and dandy would be the worst thing they could do. It also offers a nice jumping point for people like me to leave the franchise since I couldn't care less about Captain Marvel and company. I disagree with that. I think if they kill off all of the main characters, they risk alienating a huge section of the audience. You only have to look at Star Wars to see the potential disaster lurking around the corner should Feige mishandle the next step.
