Director Teruo Ishii produced a series of very stylish black thrillers during the late 50s and early 60s, moving onto exploitation features, his 1958 film Nyotai sanbashi is a knockout. The prolific cult director creates an engrossing tale with his unique cinematic crime action style.
He made an excellent noir style crime series, Kurosen chitai (1960), Ôsen chitai (1960) and Sekushî chitai (1961) and began the very popular prison film series with Abashiri Bangaichi (1965) he is often referred to in Japan as "The King of Cult".
