Kind of a thankless role but he was superb in it, and hilarious. The show was best when it had Frank, Trapper and Henry Blake and didn't take itself so seriously. When Winchester came on board is when the show lost its sense of humor. BJ wasn't much better. I find the latter seasons hard to watch.
