He's competent. To reach the level of "good" though I think you have to be bringing something new to the table, however subtle or small, and I don't think he's done that. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. I say that to reach the level of GREAT you have to bring something new to the table. You don't have to do that to be a GOOD director. I'd even argue that Ron Howard did bring something new to the table with Backdraft, which still to this day has the best fire effects ever put on film.
