Warning
long meandering post is up next. I'm at my core an Optimist. I'm hoping Aquaman kills it. It would be Ironic if the butt of every comic book joke for 30 years becomes a smash. A mild success will push WB to continue DCEU but with changes. An all out bomb would cause the scrapping of DCEU. WB will keep some of the actors in the DCEU on for what comes after the DCEU. WB/DC won't explain it in story or out of it never addressing the elephant in the room. (this could confuse Average Joe and Jill Public, while pissing off hardcore fans) A bona fied hit and the DCEU will continue past WW1984 to the Flash, Birds of Prey etc. More importantly than profit, Aquaman could fix some of the ill will the DCEU has garnered. If WB feels like Aquaman did that then it would bolster them to continue with DCEU. And who knows that might be a good thing. Right now I think they should scrap it and start individual movies. I could be wrong.
I reread what I said and it does come off like I believe they were going to vault Shazam and stop filming of WW84. I just worded that wrong. When I said a flop would be a clean break for DCEU, I meant scrap all the movies they have in development. Let Wonder Woman 1984 be the last DCEU movie.
Part of me thinks even if Aquaman pulls an insanely low box office WB will continue on with Wonder Woman Franchise without the DCEU. Like a 3-6 picture deal. I still can't believe how wrong I was about Gal Gadot. Never have I ever been so happy to be proven wrong in my life.
My Predictions
:(which means fuck all)Aquaman will pull in globally $520m-$540m.(a mild success)
Even with just a mild success, Aquaman will do a lot to clean up DCEU's reputation.
Shazam will be another misstep. Quietly WB takes off Black Adam from the schedule.
Shazam will have little effect good or bad on DCEU. The movie will try to have a ironic subtext. Something to do with people's infatuation with other people in power. It will juxtapose real problems in society with Billy's childish wonder of being a superhero. The two tones clash in the movie.
WW1984 will build upon Aquaman's rehabilitation of DCEU's brand. It will be a big hit but it won't have the staying power/legs of the first one.
With slight success with Aquaman and big success of WW1984, Birds of Prey and Scorsese's Joker movie will start production during WW1984 post production. Quietly Leto's Joker movie will be cut from the schedule
I think Ben Afleck will retire the cape and cowl. This would make WB scramble like mad to get a new batman for Reeve's The Batman. If rumors are true they have already started looking.
In the end, I think you are right. WB is going to make standalones even with a successful Aquaman, Shazam, and WW84. If Aquamans Box Office is from middling to a hit WB will keep pushing the movies apart from each other. (This will force the DCEU to evolve into The DC Slightly Connected Universe DCSCU for short) The movies would never be completely autonomous, there will be a little bit of connective tissue.
If Aquaman bombs, then WW84 will be the last DCEU movie with WB holding on to Gal Gadot.
Also if Aquaman bombs, every movie WB/DC has thrown out to the public and see which ones stick, will be moved back to development hell.
After a few years of this, with movie contracts ending, all of the DCEU movies will be removed from the schedule.
A few more years will pass and WB/DC will pull a B level hero from the roster and make a great intimate low budget DC film.
DC/WB will start to tap other heroes in small to medium budgeted movies. The movies will be well crafted because of the low budgets and in spite of them. (btw
desperation is the Mother of Invention not Necessity) The change in philosophy of DC Movies post DCEU will be recognized by the people. Sometimes smaller is better.
The small dark Stand Alone Movies will be commercially successful. Also they will be received well by the public at large and critics.
Finally after a grand total of 5-10 years of no DCEU, WB will take a mulligan and try for a Universe one more time.
