It's a lot of money and effort for a piece of paper.
Marriage as a social construct is a form of societal control. If men and women are married then there will be no random and liberal sex, no rape, no unwanted pregnancy, no homosexuality, etc etc. At least that's what they hoped would happen.
Didn't quite work out that way, but people still hold on to the illusion. Just like we still teach little girls to look up to princesses, and that sort of thing...
