Francis Ford Coppola talks on his audio commentary about not knowing how he would end the film. He’s not kidding. Once Brando is reached, the film really doesn’t have much sense of direction or purpose. In the Redux version, I do appreciate the inclusion of Kurtz reading a TIME magazine article espousing how successful American forces are doing in Vietnam. Still, what comes before it is masterful.
