We didn't really fully understand the full extent of what the steroids were doing. We knew the two were on something (a substance was seen in McGwire's locker), but we didn't attribute the homers fully to the roids. However, there were a few people who were disgusted by the whole home run chase. They knew it was ALL steroid driven. They were right.
I also remember some folks being mad at fans for cheering these players hitting home runs against their favorite teams in their ball parks. Sosa cracks a home run at Shea Stadium and Met fans cheered. it was weird and bad.
