Would Star Trek be the franchise with all the rabid fanboys? Would anything else have emerged to fill the void? If ANH had flopped SOOOOOOOOOOOOO much would be different today. SO MUCH.
No, Star Trek would not be the franchise amongst fanboys. Paramount made Star Trek the Motion Picture as a direct result of the success of Star Wars. They basically said, as all studios do, "what do we have that can make SW sized money?" and they had the rights to Star Trek. ST the Motion Picture revived the ST franchise, if not ST would have been relegated to Lost In Space levels of interest.
No, without SW:ANH the entire landscape of motion pictures AND pop culture at large would not be the same.
All the movie studios suddenly started making lots more sci-fi movies and movies that had vast merchandising potential which led to the growth of pop culture at large. Suddenly we saw Superman the Movie, Star Trek the Motion Picture, The Black Hole (they cant all be winners), Alien, Blade Runner, The Terminator, etc. All of which led to the growth of several franchises!
Before SW we did not collect toys. There were some G.I. Joe collectors and some model train collectors, but that was it. After SW it was cool to collect dolls i.e. "action figures". It was cool to be into sci-fi. It was cool to be into comic books. George Lucas made one of the most BRILLIANT deals ever in that while the studio retained the movie rights he retained the licensing rights! No studio would ever allow that ever again.
Comic conventions would be about nerdy guys that live in their mothers basements, now it for everyone, including hot babes who cosplay in skimpy outfits!
My grades would have been better in grade school because I would have been paying attention in class instead of thinking about SW!
SO MUCH would be different!!!
