I get the point of what Verducci is saying, and I agree that pitchers just don’t put up the numbers anymore that Glavine and Maddux put up, let alone Gibson and Marichal. But if they let Jon Lester into the Hall of Fame then what is the value of being elected anymore? If people are hemming and hawing over Schilling and Mussina’s qualifactions, two better pitchers than Lester, then why the need for this article? Halladay was DOMINANT in his prime, stuck on bad Blue Jays teams in a loaded division before finding post-season success in Philly. Can you say that Lester was ever dominant? I’m getting really tired of the Don Sutton type careers getting elected.
