But, the depths of the ocean are dark and murky. The brighter tone set by Wan underscores a more fantasy tone than one rooted in science fiction. There's nothing wrong with that of course; it's a stylistic choice. I was just hoping for something a bit more credible and less fantastic. If they went with a dark and murky aesthetic, people would’ve complained about how they’re trying too hard to be edgy and realistic, and not willing to embrace the weirdness of the source material.
