I think that makes it more scandalous. The way the public, media, politicians had these guys as guilty and wanted them to be guilty without knowing the whole story. A lot of people could have had their careers ruined but were able to walk away as if nothing happened.
Jackie MacMullan wrote a horrible article (which I can't find) titled "We Know". Basically, she called the Duke players guilty, called then out for protesting their innocence and demanded they confess. It was vile, but if fits right into today's "guilty until proven innocent" times.
