Taking up the Circus theme… “Circus Boy” was a children’s western from Screen Gems. It played on Saturday mornings in my city. The first season premiered in September 1956 on NBC. The show moved to ABC for its second and last season from September 1957 to December 1957. 49 total episodes were broadcast. 12-year-old Mickey Braddock starred as Corky, whose parents were killed in a high-wire accident. Robert Lowery was Big Tim Champion, the new owner of the circus and guardian of Corky. Noah Berry, Jr. was Uncle Joey, a clown. A couple of other occasional occurring actors were Guinn “Big Boy” Williams as a roustabout and Sterling Holloway as Elmer Purdy. My major memories of the show were the opening credits and the Season 1, Episode 4 story when Corky rode a camel to victory in a horse race. Who knew camels were faster than race horses? Well, maybe it’s true. 12 years later, Mickey Braddock, this time under his real name of Mickey Dolenz, became one of The Monkees. Robert Lowery had been the second actor to play Batman on screen. Lewis Wilson became the first in the 15-chapter cliffhanger serial “Batman” in 1943. Lowery replaced him in the follow-up serial “Batman and Robin” – another 15 chapters – in 1949. Lowery also starred alongside TVs Superman, George Reeves, in a WWII training film called “Sex Hygiene.”
