I didn't like it on first viewing, but it really grew on me in repeat viewings and now I love it.
It's full of ambiguous meaning, memorable images, a great villain in HAL, an iconic score and sets that still look great 50 years later.
This is how I feel although I dont love it, just like it quite a bit. Its one of those films where you need to do some background reading before you view it for the first time - because without it you will almost certainly find it boring and pretentious. And the poll needs an opinion of inbetween a masterpiece and garbage. I never thought of that but it probably would be beneficial to read the book before seeing the film. I read it many years after seeing it and it explained quite a bit.
