Some of my favourites You have already mentioned rudeboy . I will add a few from my side that I liked and believe some people may appreciate. The Young One (1960) (Bunuel) I have been meaning to watch Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors for the longest time... I have never even heard of Kidnapping, Caucasian Style - it sounds well worth tracking down! Hi Rudeboy,
I have a very high opinion of Soviet movies. I do suggest you to try out Soviet comedies of the director Leonid Gaidai. I especially suggest the following movies:
Apart from that I also recommend Soviet horror called VIY (1967)
I strongly encourage you to watch Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors. It's beautiful like a painting. The movie proved to be very unlucky for the director Parajanov as the Soviet Union government thought it was a movie to light Ukranian freedom movement. He was arrested on false charges of gay rape and put behind bars. The movie in itself is a very moving love story. Tremendous detail has been given to customs and traditions of Ukraine.
If you enjoy one of these movies then I do be glad to recommend more.
Just a note - My initial list was a list of random movies that I remember I enjoyed from 60s. It was not a list of my absolute favourites. Viridiana (1961) would be my no.1 pick.
