Can't it be both? Its one of those films where you need to do some background reading before you view it for the first time it probably would be beneficial to read the book before seeing the film. That's the same arguement fans of the source material use when an adaptation doesn't explain something... or people use when a movie based on true events expects the viewer to know every detail of historical context. No, a movie has to work on its own. In an overall sense I agree. The movie definitely stands on its own but I think, for longtime fans like myself and many others, it would be very good to read the book.
