Generally, I hate westerns as a film genre, but I gotta admit that these B-movies are an enjoyable (albeit guilty) pleasure, LOL.
In many of these films, Hoppy is assisted by a young romantic lead (the one who "gets the girl", with Hoppy's blessing) in capturing the "bad guys". In fact, some of the villains was played by up-and-coming actor Robert Mitchum.
William Boyd started out in silent films, especially with C. B. DeMille, and he actually had to learn horseback riding in order to prepare for the title role in this series. But it was worth it; these movies made him a millionaire and launched a huge marketing craze. In fact, his last screen appearance was as a cameo in THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH, where was Hopalong Cassidy for the last time.
BTW, there was another actor of the same name who was active mostly in the 1930's. However, by then, the other actor was so famous, that this one was billed as "William 'Stage' Boyd".
