The films 'Hoppy' made for the producing Pine Brothers at Paramount during the late 1930s were the better ones in the series. Mitchum appeared in seven of the films in the early 1940s before his career took off. In the original books that the character was based on, he was a rather cantankerous and unkempt old goat. Boyd cleaned him up considerably. His usual shtick was the belly laugh. Boyd also shows up (in vintage footage) in a Hollywood parade atop 'Topper' at the end of LA CONFIDENTIAL. The "cantankerous and unkempt old goat" was probably the character played by Gabby Hayes in most of these movies.
