If I remember correctly, they went from being westerns to be more like detective stories in a western setting over the years, but I might be wrong too. William Boyd was actually Cecil B. DeMille's first choice to play Moses in his remake of The Ten Commandments 1956, I've forgotten the reason why it didn't became that way. I'd guess it was because Boyd was too old for the early scenes and that he really wanted to retire from acting.
