There are some very interesting Superman stories. Red Son is worth a read...and the whole Death of and rebirth series was cool.

Yeah, it has to be an event. I find most people, and this includes the movies, don;t know what to do with him. That's why I prefer Man of Steel. At least in that he was battling peers and, unlike Superman II, they had the tech to make it look impressive.

I was reading comics when John Byrne took over his comics after Crisis and he managed to tell stories in a way that either highlighted his weakness (There was one where Metallo was introduced and Superman, not knowing what Kryptonite was what getting his butt kicked), used magic wisely, or placed the public in danger in ways that made him think.

I think they should just rob Byrne's stories and retool them for movies. A Lex Luthor backed Metallo story would have been a great thing to see.
