Personally, I think a selector should be asking one question: who are the eleven players most likely to win me a match. Now unless someone's hammering the door down with runs galore in FC or List A cricket, I'll take a bloke whose made test tons and, just 7 months ago, was far and away their best player in a tough overseas tour in Oz. I don't think 'meriting a spot' is relevant unless there's clearly someone better to come in. If that's the thinking you're dropping one man who doesn't merit a spot to bring in someone else who doesn't either.
