Yeah. Quality doesn't always mean everything 'cause one person's version of a quality storyline could be seen as garbage to many others and there were a lot of fans of Alex and Maggie and they not only impacted that one young girl I posted an article about but a lot of other teenage girls who shared similar stories. While I wasn't personally a big fan of the Alex and Maggie pairing I thought it was great we had a lesbian couple in the show and I can see why it was so impactful on them 'cause we didn't have representation like that here when we were kids and we saw more people using the word 'dyke' as an insult to single hetero female characters in movies 'cause they didn't have boyfriends than positive representations of lesbian characters. I am hoping they do justice with this though and am happy for the transgender people who watch 'Supergirl.'
I think every generation needs it is the thing and not needs just gay or lesbian, bi or what have you characters but those coming out stories, we had them in the 90's with shows like Dawnsons Creek, Buffy and that but that was 20 years ago, I think what some of us don't think about is not only should gay characters be on shows but especially if your audience skews younger you need coming out stories, having gay characters is great but I don't know how well just having already established gay men or lesbian ladies helps with people who have yet to come to term with who they are.
So long as they don't make a joke out of the character I think it will be fine, just don't expect high calibre storytelling, this is Supergirl afterall.
I completely agree with you here Dazz and a lot of people who are against LGBT representation don’t actually realise just how important it is to have these characters appearing in positive roles in movies and TV shows or they realise it but like the homophobes that ruined the ‘Supergirl’ IMDB board they didn’t want us having any LGBT characters at all ‘cause of their hatred for us. It was extremely ironic how some of them were trying to make out we don’t face any discrimination but they used the Alex and Maggie relationship to launch an attack on all of us and spread hate everywhere and when they say we don’t need LGBT representation in movies and TV shows their behaviour shows the opposite and it is young people who need it most of all ‘cause many of them have to deal with people like that on a day to day basis on the internet and some of them take their own lives ‘cause they can’t handle the bullying and discrimination they face. Not to mention some of them still have to put up with having homophobic parents like Beccy and I did who will never accept them for who they really are and it is sad that still happens now but having characters in movies and TV shows shows those children there are other LGBT people out there and they are there is nothing wrong with them.
The main problem with homophobia and transphobia in my opinion is we have far less homophobes and transphobes than we had before but the ones that we have remaining have become more vocal than they were before and are using the anonymity of the internet to air their hate everywhere and attack us and it is sadly the same with racists online and some comment sections of articles about movies with people of colour as leads look like they are a KKK meeting with the amount of hate they are writing.
