Yeah, I can see your point about dress styles etc
but hell, even there some people are a little too off-the-rails as you can only be so 'different' before normal-ish range goes out the window with what people wear.
but your parents actually had problem with students wearing jeans at a public school? ; I doubt many would have a issue with that here in the USA, especially in a public school. but I can see your point about teaches and other higher ups in school as they probably have to dress less casual to look professional etc. but yeah, I can see with the general technology thing that nowadays things are much different. hell, even from back in my high school days was mostly pre-internet/cell phone etc (as those never really went mainstream til about 1998-2000) as I can imagine things are noticeably different today in this regard as I would imagine schools in general are probably noticeably more tech oriented since I last knew in the late 1990's.
How old are you? ; with those comments it sounds like your referring more towards my grandparent level of people or thereabouts because my parents are in their 60's and I know my grandma (who was born Nov 1918(she's still alive and is my only grandparent still alive)) did not have a washer/dryer etc and did a lot of stuff by hand in the old days (sounds like your mostly referring to people from roughly in that age bracket). but yeah, in the old days crime seemed to be much less from what I have heard to like you could trust people more in general but surely not for quite some time now (basically that trusting people more was definitely before my time as many have been shady for decades now). since it was before my time, I would guess roughly the 1970's is pretty much when things started going out the window in this regard.
just some thoughts

things back then were harder [no dishwashers/things like that] but they were simpler. no one had to worry about the wifi being down or the asshole neighbors tapping into our cable. we didn't have to worry about the computer systems going out and our credit cards not working. we had no electric house alarms to deter robbers but back then what could you really steal? the hifi system that took four workers to deliver and install? that cabinet tv that probably has a wonky vertical hold? the fur coat, MAYBE.
