I had never even heard of Maggie Smith until she was up for an Oscar in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie (1969). After seeing her there, I went back to see her older movies later when they were available in the US. This is strange since I had pervisouly seen her in The V.I.P.s (1963) and she didn't register with me then.. For those who haven't seen Hot Millions (1968), I recommend it highly.. As for her role as Desdemona in Othello (1965) (seen much later), all I could think of --or worry about--was Laurence Olivier's blackface rubbing off in Smith's hands.
