I do think some directors need to be kept in check and not let their ego run amok. You don't want too much self-indulgence. That's exactly what happened with Heaven's Gate; a director run amok with a blank check. As a result, producers were back in charge. I think that movie, along with the success of blockbusters like Jaws and Star Wars, killed the wave of 1970's personal filmmaking.
