I think that Japanese takes on European stories are usually pretty nice even if they don't stick to the original. We have seen some good adaptations of European stories in Samurai Saga (1959) and Throne of Blood (1957). Of course, those were the movies of big directors. I do be interested in giving Rasuto Furankenshutain (1991) one try myself.
