Because what's the problem with this movie in terms of today's standards? Basically the only characters in it that drive the plot are white males, and opposed to that the only female characters are either inconsequential to the plot or portrayed as a spoiled bimbo. And not only that, the main story would seem sexist by today's standards. Because it has some rich guy betting some loser, that if he doesn't raise enough money he can't see his daughter.
Because now, in today's movie plots they want everyone to be more equal, or words to that effect.
But basically the main 'problem' is that they have all the male characters serve as 'plot functions' where-as the female characters are basically passive (while the male characters are dominant over them), and pretty much have no main significance over the main plot.
They're basically feminine and have only female characteristics , so therefore they don't drive the story foreward in a male driven story such as this.
You don't believe me? Take a look at the cover of it, it's all males, you wouldn't see something like that today:
