Just a further thought:
If you are familiar with the story Brideshead Revisited, you know that a large part of the story dealt with Sebastian's and all of his relatives' in the Flyte family (the family who own the Brideshead estate) being Catholic. You could not change their religion, making them just be members of the Church of England, without making the story unrecognizable, because their Catholicism was an essential feature of their character and intrinsic to the story.
But Bond's family could be Catholic, since his family's religion has never been made out to be an important part of what his stories were about.
They could conceivably even make Bond bisexual. However, they could not make him exclusively gay because his attraction to women has always been presented as an essential part of his character and what his stories were about.
