i guess it probably depends on how much someone dislikes a particular actor/actress on how much of a negative effect that will have on the overall movie.
just quickly looking through My Favorite Movies, which is 199 movies, i don't see any movie that features someone in a leading role that i noticeably dislike. but then again there is not many actors/actresses i actually dislike as the vast majority are generally neutral-to-positive for me (some are more in the neutral-to-negative side of things though). so if someone is just okay-ish (like passable but not really someone you go out of your way to see or not really a name you pay much attention to) i feel if the movie itself is good enough that will overpower the acting/their lack of a strong screen presence. but there is at least one movie amongst My Favorite Movies that has an actress i generally don't care for but she's not a major role in the movie which is The Aviator (2004) with Cate Blanchett (or like i call her... Cate BLANDchett). there is not many i avoid on their presence alone even though there are some who if they have a leading role in a movie (like where they are largely the core of the movie etc) ill largely avoid their movies.
so with that said... when it comes to the basic topic of, "Is it possible to love a movie even if you hatted the star?" ; going strictly by your wording (key words 'love'(top spec movie(say 9/10 or 10/10)) and 'hate'(major dislike)) i would have to say it's very unlikely if not impossible especially given you put the word STAR there to which means that actor/actress has a major role in the movie. there might be a slight chance though if that person i dislike is paired with someone else as sorta a co-lead and the other person has a pretty strong screen presence to partially counter the negative persons etc.
but with that said... given the volume of people out there i would not be surprised if some people would answer YES to your question in the topic but i can't imagine that would be common as i would assume that would be in the minority especially if someone is not easily pleased to any higher degree with movies in general.

To avoid Cruise movies is to miss out on some quality movies as i feel there is not a single actor (or actress) out there who can challenge his overall filmography quality as he's got the highest volume of movies i score a 7 or higher of anyone out there @ 13 movies (which makes him the safest all around bet for me when it comes to watching a good movie on a actor/actresses name alone) which are...
1.Jerry Maguire (1996) - 9/10
2.The Color of Money (1986) - 8/10
3.Interview With The Vampire (1994) (the #1 vampire/horror themed movie hands down)
4.Mission Impossible (1996) - 7.5-8/10
-.Mission Impossible III (2006)
-.Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation (2015)
-.Risky Business (1983)
-.War of the Worlds (2005)
9.Rain Man (1988)
10.Top Gun (1986) - 7-7.5/10
11.Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol (2011) - 7/10
--.Edge of Tomorrow (2014)
13.Valkyrie (2008) - 6.5-7/10
there is more i like beyond those thirteen but i used the 7 or higher standard as anything that score a 7 or higher makes it amongst My Favorite Movies which currently contains 199 movies.
but outside of the bold text... i agree with the initial part of your statement in that i typically avoid movies that have actors/actresses i don't care for unless the movie has subject matter i like and the trailer is good and might even be paired with a decent director etc. also, it partially depends on how much of a role the actor/actress has that i don't care for to.
my sisters tell me it doesn't make sense that I loved a movie where I didn't like the main star but I thought the good stuff at the end had more weight than Emma's horrible take on belle.

In general, I don't bother with films when I don't like the leading actors. I haven't seen a Tom Cruise movie since 1998.
