You've probably seen both sides argue each was to blame, but Azerbaijan certainly exacerbated things in the time leading up to the conflict and beyond. The ceasefire left Armenia coming out best. Azerbaijan had over 3 times the troop casualties Armenia suffered. I wonder how Armenians were fare so relatively well when they were significantly outnumbered both in size of troops and weapons. Did Armenia had locational advantage? Seems towards the end, Armenians were more determined. Both were relying increasingly on conscripts, but it appears Azerbaijani troops were facing a serious lack of morale.
