The Emperor's Royal Guards hanging out with Vader still annoys the hell of me. I know, I know, I guess it shouldn't but it does. They only go where The Emperor is! They don't guard anyone else. That, for me, is a major drop in Star Wars continuity. Yeah, that is quite weird. In my head canon they're there because Palpatine wanted to keep an eye on Vader Why though? The Emperor acts so smug in Return of the Jedi that he has Vader wrapped around his finger. When Vader eventually throws him to his death, he didn't see it coming at all. I think having him suspect Vader's treachery (for even in Revenge of the Sith Anakin offers for Padme/Obi-Wan to overthrow the Emperor and rule together) wouldn't be consistent with the narrative in the OT. hmmmm I wonder if the director for Rogue One has ever addressed this issue. I would be interested in hearing his take on it. I would be interested to hear him defend their inclusion in the movie because it thoroughly confused me. I expected The Emperor to be revealed in that scene due to the Royal Guards - not Vader.
