This is why, many astronomers theorize, we have not encountered other advanced civilizations in the universe. They destroyed themselves.
My theory is that perhaps they destroyed themselves because they realised that perpetuating sentient life can never be a profitable game to play, no matter what kind of cool and crazy species might have evolved elsewhere in the universe. Once a civilisation gets to a certain level of maturity, it would be difficult to avoid this philosophical revelation. Or maybe they create AI technology which reaches this revelation for them. That's my theory about the fermi paradox.
