Your system where someone can become leader without a vote of the majority of the population is asinine. Has happened in the UK a few times too. That's how Major, Brown and May all became PM. Yep. But even how the system normally works - ok, everyone knows who the PM will be if the party wins, but that candidate is only directly voted for by a handful of people in their constituency. I know they are usually from supersafe seats, but in theory the party could win while their leader loses their seat.
