An Irish Airman Foresees His Death
W. B. Yeats, 1865 - 1939
I know that I shall meet my fate
Somewhere among the clouds above;
Those that I fight I do not hate
Those that I guard I do not love;
My country is Kiltartan Cross,
My countrymen Kiltartan’s poor,
No likely end could bring them loss
Or leave them happier than before.
Nor law, nor duty bade me fight,
Nor public man, nor cheering crowds,
A lonely impulse of delight
Drove to this tumult in the clouds;
I balanced all, brought all to mind,
The years to come seemed waste of breath,
A waste of breath the years behind
In balance with this life, this death.

A challenge to Yeats occurs at the close of the movie King Kong
Police Lieutenant: Well, Denham, the airplanes got him.
Carl Denham: Oh no, it wasn't the airplanes. It was beauty killed the beast.
I did like the movie when I was a kid.
I also lived at airbases, my dad was in Britain's Royal Air Force.
I do recall Top Gun actually had US Navy recruiters at some cinemas, and they did the same thing with The Hunt for Red October. The latter movie based on a book by an author known for his techno-military books, and whose name adorns many video games, like the Rainbow Six, Ghost Recon and Splinter Cell series.
😎
I think the job people get is the job they're going to get according to their inclinations. I don't believe the military can help much with science or technology. It's easy to a mechanic if that's what you really want.
