Theism is itself a layer that its wearers don to protect their real 'skin' from existentially troublesome ideas, which means that the real skin doesn't have the chance to become calloused.
By facing up to these ideas with fewer layers, or no layers, atheists have a chance to anneal or callous their outer layer. I wouldn't say that all atheists do this, however, and many of the so-called 'SJWs' who demand to be cossetted and protected from any kind of challenge to their core values.
