I enjoyed it but it was just so overhyped. I still don't feel it is nearly as good as some people claim, especially the acting in the film. There was but so much for either actor to do, yet alone to receive Oscar nominations and Emma Stone actually winning? Her performance doesn't come close to Natalie Portman in "Jackie" or Isabelle Hupert in "Elle". I remember after the film coming out there were polls all over the internet about musicals and La La Land was beating classics like West Side Story, Grease, Mary Poppins etc. in polls about best film and best soundtrack. Its a bit nuts such a basic movie got so much hype that everyone believed it. With that said, I do not dislike it. I enjoy it for what it is and I loved the opening musical number. I thought it was very beautifully shot and visually stunning at times. However, its a shallow story with basic thin acting and writing that skated by on looks. 5.5/10 I don't rate it highly. I didn't care very much about the characters, and when it (spoilers!) ends with them splitting up and going in different directions, I was left wondering why I was supposed to care about a relationship that didn't work out. Plus, the first song in it was the only remotely memorable one. And hour after it finished I couldn't have hummed any of the others. All in all I thought it was just kind of meh, bordering on just plain boring. I didn't hate it, but I've no desire to ever see it again. I gave it to my parents, who love all the classic musicals like Fiddler on the Roof, Cabaret, etc. They said they turned it off within about 30 minutes.
