I didn't say the actual ending didn't work, I simply thought it tried too much to be smart or edgy compared to what it could have been. While I'm for smart/edgy/out of the box/whatever-you-want-to-name-that endings, I also believe some films could and should be enjoyed the way you would with Ziegfeld Follies.

also, I don't really look at movies as being the smart/edgy stuff as I look at them in terms of working or not, entertaining (and the like) or not which comes back to some emotional response for me when I break down movies to their core as the better/stronger the emotional response I get from watching it, the higher the score etc. but anyways...
but I guess given the video clip you posted compared to say some dance scenes in La La Land... they probably ain't all that different besides the setting which in this regard I tend to prefer the way La La Land looks as it helps the mood etc. but at the same time I guess some people might prefer that old days style like what you linked to. with that said... I can't really say I have seen much in the old days regard as about the only movie that comes to mind that's got that sort of stuff in it from what I recall is... Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953) which I thought was average overall. I gave that a 5/10.
if you care, here is a little article on La La Lands ending titled... "'La La Land’ Producer, Director Defend Ending as an Alternative to the Hollywood Fairy Tale"... www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/la-la-land-ending-meaning-explained-978105
The discussion is going in many directions here.
When it comes to movie rating, I got a similar system. First I give a temporary rating based on how I felt globally (like is it globally a masterpiece 10 or total garbage 1) then I add or subtract points for good or bad elements/details.
As for the scenes, there is a difference between them. The idea behind the whole movie, Ziegfeld Follies, was to deliver something for the sheer amazement and beauty values. Here are some other scenes:
I personally rated Gentlemen Prefer Blondes 7/10, so we're not seeing eye to eye but we're not miles apart either.
As for the article, I read it and I got the realism idea just by watching the movie but I still felt it there was a great opportunity to make a "beautiful" faiy-tale like ending.
On a side note I would agree that sometimes realism is better than plain dumb "entertainment".
