My top 5 directors are not fixed. My top 6-10 could be part of my top 1-5 next time you ask me. Yes, my no.1 is always fixed. It is Luis Bunuel. My top 5 non-English directors are simply my top 5 directors. There is no one from English film industry who would break in my top 5. Kubrick and Hitch and Ford may be in my top 20.
5. Fritz Lang - Der müde Tod -> I have literally zero idea how can this movie not be more widely known. It is the mother of German expressionism. Haunting movie that can have lasting impressions on you. Fritz Lang gave us M, Metropolis and The Testament of Dr. Mabuse (1933). Really, that's an awesome resume. Had to move out of his country and yet produced so many gems in a foreign language.
4. Carl Theodor Dreyer - Ordet -> Ordet is my second fav movie of all-time after Sansho Dayu. Dreyer made few movies but most of them were gems.
3 Masaki Kobayashi - Harakiri -> Often not talked in the same breath as Kenji Mizoguchi , Ozu and Kurosawa, Kobayashi gave us some unforgettable movies.
2 Ingmar Bergman - I have no idea how to pick between Persona/Wild Strawberries/The Seventh Seal -> This man was a sheer genius. His movis study human mind better than movies of any other director.
1. Luis Bunuel - Viridiana -> He has made many other great movies. Viridiana is special for me because it was first of Bunuel that I ever saw. Even Catholic Church was greatly shaken by it.
I feel a bit guilty that I didn't include Kenji Mizoguchi , Renoir, De Sica, Eisenstein, Murnau, Carne etc. Next time you ask me one of these and a few more could be in my top 5.
