I have never seen a single remake, reboot or sequel with an original iconic character or film have a lead that is anywhere near as memorable or as effective as the original for these same reasons.
I can certainly understand the resistance to recasting a beloved, classic character. But no amount of reboots or remakes can ever sully the original. No matter how bad the Robocop remake was, it didn't affect how good the original still is. So I have no issue with any character ever being recast. If it sucks, I'll just ignore it and rewatch the original. I'm looking at you, Fright Night.
But were those characters ICONIC in the original movie? I have seen MASH and I never thought WOW, what a memorable performance/portrayal on the level the guy in the video is talking about. I think part of the reason is because MASH TV show came out so quickly after the original and the original only being one movie makes a huge difference too.
Is Kristy Swanson really ICONIC as the character? That movie and her performance aren't even considered good. I am a huge film fan and I saw the original way before I ever saw the TV show and I never once thought of it as an iconic or memorable performance. In fact, when someone says Buffy the Vampire Slayer I think of SMG and I have only seen a couple episodes of that show.
