"Midnight Cowboy"
What are the other choices Mr. Dirty? One year I am torn over is 75', but ultimately, I know that One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest was the best choice over Jaws. I also like that All About Eve won for 50'; The Deer Hunter for 78'; Ordinary People for 80; Terms Of Endearment for 83', Amadeus for 84'; Out Of Africa for 85', Platoon for 86', Dances With Wolves for 90; Silence Of The Lambs for 91. There are also other years that I am content with, but anything up until pretty much the 70's, I would have see more of to make a more informed opinion.
I am pleased that Midnight Cowboy won for 69' in year of classics and it was in a sense for it's time, a bold and brave move by the Academy. As time will also attest, it has also lost none of its emotional impact today and the film-making technique is not caught up in a zeitgeist style of being trapped from it's era, but embraces the look of the very late 60's, and still has a contemporary feel\approach about it.
I love what you said that "Midnight Cowboy" embraces the look of the very, very late 60s (almost couldn't be from any other year except 1969) I wish that "A Streetcar Named Desire" had won in 1951.
