I have to make one argument here. I think in terms of the individual watching a particular movie it depends on which version the viewer saw first in some cases. I also think bringing up RJ McReady is a bit silly because Kurt Russell isn't the main reason The Thing is so good. What I mean is that The Thing is about what is happening and the monster and effects more than it is about one particular performance or character. This is nothing against Kurt Russell in the movie, because he is awesome. You can't remake an Indiana Jones movie or a John Rambo movie without the character, where as you can with The Thing. RJ Mcready is one of the reasons why the film is so good and Russell's amazing performance. RJ Mcready is not an iconic character to the general public and is not the main reason the movie is remembered so well. He is not ingrained into the mind of the masses in the same way Han Solo, Indiana Jones etc. are. He is a better character and better performance than Harrison Ford as Hans Solo imo, but that doesn't make him iconic on the same level as the other characters mentioned. I also don't think RJ Mcready fits with the other characters he is talking about because he is only in ONE movie. The other characters are franchise characters where money can be made off of the character brand. There is no reason his character even needs used in another movie. As much as I love Kurt Russell in The Thing, I wouldn't find it overly distracting if they re-cast the character if they ever made a remake of the movie. This isn't the case for me when it comes to every other character in the video and it doesn't have to do with the fact that I don't like the movie as much as most people. I think The Thing is a much better movie than Escape from New York, but re-casting Snake Plisskin would be very distracting if they made a remake or sequel.
